Lavant CE Primary School
Lavant CE Primary School is a warm and welcoming village school near Chichester, West Sussex. They introduced Anima Phonics in September 2021, after trialling the programme during the term before. All staff have access to the Anima Phonics e-learning platform, as well as utilising the printable resources and learning aids.
Ali Totman, EYFS/Y1 Teacher at Lavant Primary School, invited us to spend the day with her.

"I love that Anima Phonics is there for us in structure but still allows us a degree of freedom in how it is delivered."

Amazing Progress at Lavant!

Progress in Reception
"My Reception cohort this year are really confident with the sounds and reading CVC and CCVC/CVCC words. Their journey through the reading levels is quicker than in other years. They are doing well with their writing too."

Progress in Year 1
“The Year 1 children have also only ever known this scheme and are really fluent readers in the main. They talk a lot more about phonics and the visual support in the teaching spaces are much more used and relevant to them."

Progress in Year 2
"We have run a couple of parent workshops and this has been wonderful to allow time for parents to understand phonics and how it works. The parents like the activities which go home to support the weekly learning and have commented on how quickly they can see their child making progress in reading and writing."

"The customer service is fantastic - a swift reply whenever you need it and such friendliness."

We are totally chuffed with Anima Phonics. It really works for us and we're building confidence in teaching it across KS1 and EYFS which is great for consistency and intervention.
I like the pace of the week and how well it slots into our planning across the whole week. The common exception words are clearly taught and the support materials are so good!
I love the online resources. They aren’t overwhelming and busy. They are clearly focused and enough interaction and visual stimulus to support the learning and keep the interest of the children.
The children like the familiarity of the approach for each unit but they also like the switch up when the unit changes. Keeps it familiar for a time and then freshens it up when you begin a new unit. They feel confident with it and it means something to them. They engage with it because it is multi-sensory and revisiting sounds allows them to become really fluent which again builds their confidence.
Ali Totman - EYFS / Year 1 Teacher
“I like the ease of the planning and the model of teach, practise and then apply. The visuals and the actions are brilliant prompts for children as they are building their fluency.”
